Member Spotlight Archives: Joel Kann

Name: Joel Kann

Nickname: Doc

Age: 55

Occupation: Family physician

Hobbies/Other interests: Motorcycling (natch), photography, ferroequinology, and hanging out in my hammock reading good sci-fi.

Type of Ride: Green/green '99 Kawasaki Nomad

Dream ride: The same. (Ask Mark Kot)

How long have you been riding?: Started at 18 on a 90cc Honda dream ("you meet the nicest people on a Honda"). Graduated to a 160cc Ducati a few months later, Rode for a living for 3 years as a motorcycle messenger in NYC. (Like the pony express without the horseshit.) Sold my 550f four cylinder Honda in 1977. Re-entered about 6 years ago with a 750 Shadow deluxe.

Average Miles a Year: about 5000+

What do you like about riding?: The zen of the road. Being in the moment with the feel, sights, smells, and sounds of the ride pushing out all other concerns. Instant friends with other riders at any rest stop. Young kids on porches and grandpas on lawn tractors waving as you go by. And, of course, the comraderie, connection, and sense of family with all my SCRC buddies.

Why did you join SCRC?: To share the joys and experience of riding with others.

What does SCRC mean to you?: A group of good friends who accept each other for who we are, joke about our differences, and share the common love of the ride. Feeling like I can call on a member anywhere I go and have instant family there, even if we have never met before. (I've done this).

Rides you like the most: Without a doubt… the BRP.

Dream trip: Coast to coast... out on the Trans Canadian Hwy, down 101, and back on rte 66.

Favorite Quote: "You can't straighten out a snake by pushing it through a straw."

Anything else you'd like to say?: Yeah... let’s stop talkin' and ride!!!
