Weekly Update

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Sorry for the delay in the update. Once again a day late (and a dollar short).

Cooler weather is here. Election is over (except for Allen West, apparently). Rides will get shorter. It becomes a bit more important to attend bike night to "stay in touch". I am often limited by my job (my shifts run until 8 – 11pm), but will attend when possible. Bonnie and I are planning on attending Fridays bike night.

We will try to schedule short rides through the winter. I will be out of the country from mid December until mid January. It is important that we all, as members, jump in and participate in activities (riding, ride planning, ride leading, bike nights, etc) to keep the club going.

To help us in this endeavor, we will be starting a participation recognition program in GRSCRC (thanks go to Frank for this idea). This will allow us to recognize those members who are active in the club and has been used by other chapters.

We are still working out the details, but I think awarding and tracking points for participation and posting the totals on the web site and in the updates. So far we are considering: 1 point for attending bike night, 2 points for attending a ride, 1 additional point for leading or planning a ride.

I hereby donate a full 50% of my SCRC salary and stipend as a reward to the leader. Chapter officers will be ineligible for awards.

Holiday party: I haven’t heard from anybody regarding a holiday party. Since I will be away, I will leave this up to the rest of you.

We will be sending some of you questions for the member’s spotlight. If you receive these, please complete them and return them (with a photo you want to post, preferable with your bike). It is a way we can meet NEW members and new members can meet us. Clothing optional photos will either stay in my private collection or be posted on Facebook at my discretion.

Talks and plans are in the early stage for a springtime ride to the backbone of the Dragon through Va/WVa over a long weekend and our summer ride (at this point to Pa). If you are interested in helping with the planning, let me or Frank know.

Ride safe and ride often,
Joel "Doc" Kann

This last week:

Frank and Kevin (pleasantly) surprised Cindy H. by showing up at her dad's funeral in Charlotte. (WTG Frank and Kevin).

Kevin and I met at 10:15... a little pre-ride BS... then off we went in a cloud of dust... straight to the Interstate... boring ride, I-40, I-85, I-485... a short pit stop in Lexington for fuel, bio break, and shed those extra layers. We made it to Charlotte with time to spare... I asked "Mr Garmin" for the nearest lunch spot... and it came up with a non-existent place... Thankfully there WAS a Mexican place nearby, so we went with option B.

We returned to the service as it began, and paid our respects to Cindy, and Mike.

Given we were in Charlotte, AND sun-set was in less than 3 hours, Kevin and I decided it was time to leave...

We took the long was home (I know... that surprises some of you) East on NC-24 towards Albemarle, a little detour to Badin Lake, and then on through parts of Uwharrie... We really need to spend more time there, next summer... great roads, not much traffic.

Another pit stop in Asheboro... where we decided as long as we had to do SOME slab... may as well ease up NC-49 to I-85, then home... I got home right about sunset.

Great day in the saddle... wish we could have stayed longer for Cindy... but we were able at least show up, and give her a hug.

Mike Dankert ALSO laid his dad to rest this week. A sad week for GRSCRC members. We are all family.
