Back of the Dragon is behind us (for some of us, sooner than others) and everyone is home safe and well rested. This is what SCRC is about. For the group, 4 days of riding and friendship. We basically took over the Old Clarke Inn.

While some of us still like occasional solo riding, there is nothing like riding in a group for sharing the fun and laughs. SCRC IS like family. If you have not been on one of these extended or overnight rides, consider coming along on one. You will have one of the best times of your life.

Ride safe and ride often.

No Bike night.

May 16 - May 19 Back of the Dragon Ride

Bonnie N., Doc (me), Frank, Becky, Larry N., Jim, Fred, Kevin and Dorene, and Mike D. left Handy Hugos. Nice ride up through Kernersville, where my bike blew a main fuse.

The group continued on, unaware that we had dropped out (since my radio went with the fuse). They stopped for lunch at Dan Family Restaurant in Danbury, NC, while we did roadside repairs and bought some emergency fuses in town. We rode up to meet the group in Danbury and thought all was well until I turned the ignition on and watched a big puff of smoke rise up as the ignition wires fused to the switch, leaving us dead in the water.

The group, with our blessing, continued on to Wytheville, Va. where they met up with Rusty and his friend.

Meanwhile Bonnie and I made some friends in Danbury, who run Meals on Wheels and drive a shuttle bus for white water rafters. After some bike talk, we were able to locate a rental car in King (30 minutes away) and were given a ride down there. We decided to hole up in Winston, while the local auto shop rustled us up a truck and trailer for the next day and spent the night sipping Margaritas at Chili's.

Next day the group went down to Marion, then up VA-16 and the Back of the Dragon. Great twisties, but lots of gravel. Short lunch at Hardees, then up through Hinton to Marlinton, Va. to take over the Old Clark Inn, a bed and breakfast started by two bikers from NC, who rode up there and fell in love with the area.

Meanwhile, B and I got the truck/trailer and drove back to Danbury to get the bike. Along the way, paying it forward by giving a Viet vet a ride from Winston up to his home in Mt. Airy. We ran into our new friends again at the station, who helped us load up No-Mutt and strap it down. Then back home, with a stop at Cutter's to drop the bike. BTW, we heard praises of Cutters from one of their customers.

The group went their own ways in smaller groups on Saturday to ride local roads and see the sights. And another evening of laughs and friendship at the Inn.

Safe ride home for the group on Sunday.

All and all, I think, worth another trip or two.
